Abstract
Objectives: Speech intelligibility is an effective index to evaluate the communication ability of children with speech sound disorders. Conversational speech is one of the most socially valid contexts for evaluating speech intelligibility. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the speech intelligibility of spontaneous speech in typically developing children between 2-4 years of age.

Methods: The participants of this study were 30 children in 3 age groups (G1, 2;00-2;11; G2, 3;00-3;11; G3, 4;00-4;11). Speech samples of the children were collected during conversations with their caregiver at home. Twelve college students listened to the recorded samples and evaluated the intelligibility using a rating scale and Eojeol (a unit of Korean language) identification test.

Results: Intelligibilities measured by the rating were 40% for G1, 50% for G2 and 68% for G3. There were significant differences of intelligibility among groups. However the results of the intelligibilities score by the Eojeol identification test did not show any differences among those groups.

Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that the rating scale for speech intelligibility was more sensitive than the Eojeol identification task for demonstrating the developmental change of speech in young children. This study also provided the data of speech intelligibilities in typically developing Korean children between 2-4 years of age. These results can serve as useful information for clinical practice as well as for future research.
